Electric Yellows are a no-go, sorry. They need completely different water from your existing fish, would likely eat or kill them (they're mellow, but they're still mbuna), and just need more space than a 20 provides.

Thanks for the information, I think I am going to talk to another store in our area that seems to have a large selection of fish to see if they will order the keyhole for me. I was reading about the electric yellow cichlid, has anyone had experience with them?

Oh my god take no notice of this person he/she has no idea proberly never keep a single fish in their life. Yes most cichlids are very aggressive and should only be kept in a cichlids only community but there are some cichlids out there that get along fine in a community tank. I think you would most likely be better going for the keyhole they are in my option the most peaceful cichlids you could ever get. I have three in my community tank and they are all males (did have 4 lost 1 I was hoping to get a pair male/female but never mind got 3 males instead) any way they are all fine I have no problems with them at all in fact they are the most peaceful fish in my tank. They are in with (bare in mind my tank is 400 litres) with silver dollars, rainbow fish, parrots, firemouths, corys, loaches, platys, mollies, swordtails, danios, tetras (small and large),gouramis, so you see they are fine with almost any community fish that you can think of. You will notice I also have firemouths I have only had those for about 3 weeks they are very similar to the keyhole with their temperament but not quite as shy I have found they are very pretty with their colour. I have also tried Kribs but in my experience I found them very nippy to my bottom feeders but others have had them and had no problems (I might have just been unlucky) You will also notice I have parrots well these are in fact a man made cichlid so not a true cichlid really but I would not recommend these as they grow huge (I will have to re-home them eventfully) they can also be very aggressive towards humans as well as other fish but like all fish and humans even it depends on the individual (mine have been fine so far but they are still only small) Well I hope this has helped you in some sort of way to decide? I think if I were you I would wait for the keyholes to come along. Can you not order fish in at your shops only we can here in England if they don't have it in we can order it and they will get it for us.

I'm a huge fan of keyholes. They have adorable personalities and cute little faces. I have two keyhole cichlids with mollies, platies, German blue rams, and swordtails. I have another pair in a tank with chocolate gouramis. If you do go with keyholes, make sure that you have some plants and hidey-holes. They are a little shy, especially at first. I definately recommend getting more than one. My pairs are always together. This link has useful information about the Cleithracara maronii. I have never seen keyholes at the chain stores, but there are three specialized fish stores in my area that always have them. You may check your yellow pages under aquariums or pets and makes a few calls. Even if they don't carry them they may be able to order them for you. I paid between $6-$7 for each of mine. One final tip, mine love frozen bloodworms but will also happily eat flakes.

No, no, I really meant it - there's no reason for you to assume we know anything, just as I for one wouldn't recommend you trust store employees! Sorry if that came across as sarcastic.

Anyway, yes, there are a number of other lovely choices - Rams, Apistogramma species, Festivums ... call around and see what you can find, it may be surprising. But a local fish store that's primarily about fish and isn't a chain will be a much better bet than a chain pet store. Look through your yellow pages, you may find there's a store around.

This person clearly doesn't realize there are cichlids other than mbuna and big Central Americans. Basically: are you going to believe one minimum-wage pet store worker or a dozen certified fish crazies?

Anyway, don't take our word for it - google "Keyhole cichlid" and you'll get a million articles and experiences.

OK I went to my LSF (Petsmart) and one of the empolyees told me that I could not in no way have cichlids in a communnity tank. She said that they would eat the fish I have or stress them out until they die. She also said that I could only have cichlids in the tank and that if I started this tank I would have to put all of the fish in at the same time. Opinions???????

Keyholes can be tough to get ahold of, depending on where you live. In some areas, you would have to visit a specialty fish store or place an order to get keyhole cichlids. In other areas, they tend to be somewhat more common. I've never actually run into one, so I just live in a keyhole-poor region.

Hi,

I started out with a community tank, but i'm attracted to cichlids. I have a 20g with 5 neons and 6 lemon tetras. Is their a cichlid out there i can add that can co-exist in this community.

Thanks for any ideas, Shane

I'd say German Blue Rams. I have 2 in my 90 gallon, and they are beautiful!

I would say the keyholes I have 3 in my community. I have also just added a pair of firemouths. They have been in there for about a week and they seem fine they seem to have the same sort of temperament as the keyholes they are very pretty but I think they do get a bit bigger than the keyholes around 6 inches if I am correct.
