I'm Sure it Would depend exactly where u are as to what is available to be caught just remember a lot of the fish we keep are still found in the wild. What did you do with them? Heidi

I live 5 miles from the Rio Grande River where we have the Texas Cichlid in his natural habitat, and according to Texas Parks and Wildlife, they make good table fare!!

I wouldn't eat one, but if I caught one, I sure would take it home for my 55. Been thinking about going down there with a net a seeing if I could snag one.....they're good looking, ornery little (big) fish!!!

you shouldn't be able to just randomly catch them as you did. it is well known that many ca/sa cichlids have inhabited waters in florida, but this is the first I've heard of such a thing happening in Texas. this is most likely the result of someone dumping their overgrown aquarium fish(es) into the river.

Well, maybe on this midas/red devil situation it's rare, but for the Texas Cichlid, which is a gorgeous aquarium fish. His natrual habitat is in Texas....drainage canals off of the Rio Grande River....which is about five miles from my house. Since most of the fish we all like to keep come from such far flung places it's hard for many of us to imagine going and getting one from the wild in nearby proximity to where we live, but for me down here....it's a reality.

This happens in Texas all the time....the southernmost part where I am is VERY tropical (avg. year round temp. 75 degrees) There is hardly a winter to speak of, and a lot of the CA American Cichlids....especially the Texas....live very close by.

yeah, my post was referring to Crazy_Coyote's original post about catching a midas/red devil. I do know that the texas cichlid can be naturally found in the US, but this is the only cichlid that can be naturally found in the US. any other cichlid caught in US waters shouldn't be there.

That's true. Would it be wise for me to go scoop one out of the river to raise or would I be better off getting it at the fish store? I wouldn't put anything else in with it, just a species tank for Texas Cichlids.

well, my personal preference is to keep fish as close to F0 (wild caught) as possible so if I were in your situation I'd probably get out a big casting net and try to catch some of my own juveniles. That's just me though.
