I currently have a 10 gallon coldwater tank and plan to change it to a shell dweller for a couple of multies, having read with envy a lot of the posts in this forum.

The problem I have is that my cold water tank suffers from black hair algae. I am regularly breaking it down cleaning everything with 50 :50 bleach and rebuilding. IS it likely that the problem will remain with shell dwellers. Am I better off starting again from scratch??

have you figured out what is causing the black algae? is it your light? maybe with the ph change (you have to raise your ph to 8.0 and harder water to keep the shellies)the hair algae wont grow. best way to go is find out what is causing the algae and then fix that. i have never had black algae or heard of it so i cant say. or, clean your tank, change the light and set it up for shellies, cycle it and see what happens.

I think you'd be better off from scratch. Also, you'll need to change sand, add shells, and some rockwork for the shellies, so basically it almost is starting over. A 10 gallon will cycle quickly so it wont be that hard.

Is the tank near sunlight?? That might be the cause, or you might be leaving the light on too long.
