Can large cichlids handle the flow from an internal power filter?

I was wanting to use them to help out my cannisters in the 250 Gallona I'm planning.

Yup, they can. I keep powerheads on my tanganyikan tanks.

There are exceptions, as some types of cichlids wouldnt like alot of water movement (discus, angelfish, etc, which may be bugged by the high water movement). Others like oscars, jds, GTs, etc wouldnt mind.

Which internal brand and model were you thinking of using in your 250g, just curious.

what cichlids are you thinking about? as inko said, most will be fine with a high current but there will be some exceptions. if you can tell us what cichlids you were interested in it would be easier for us to answer your question.

I suggest you buy them from a nursery in Aus. It's generally cheaper to get pond pumps, which are power heads, and modify them a little for your purposes. Alternatively, ditch the canister on the 250G and set up a sump system using the pond pumps... works for my LFS.

We use the Resun 2000LPH powerhead filters (about $40-$60 AU) on our large tanks. Large cichlids will be able to handle the current. I have two of them in my 180gal (along with 2 canisters).

Depends on the cichlids.

Humphead cichlids come from flowing rivers in Africa and need a moderate current in the tank to be happy. While Discus and Angels do not like current one bit.

What you planning on keeping?

The fish will be oscars, Jack Dempsey, Firemouths, Severums and Blue acara.

Before you panic it will be in a 250 Gallon Tank.

They'll be fine. I have 2 2000lph p/h in my 180gal with a severum, blue acara and a few other larger varieties.
