no problem! i knew it could only be a few different species. those were the ones that popped into my head. i should have been more specific. good luck.

thanks for your suggestions but still not the one!
one of them looks like its gng to be turning blue when it gets bigger.. it has two stripes gng horizontal across the front of his head and they are bright blue..also has three or four pearly spots near his gills... the other one which i think is the female is still a lavender purple colour with yellow fins..
im still scrolling through pics hoping!!!!
any more suggestions would be wonderful!

They may be in America but here in Australia they're really common.

i am thinking red top zebra now. where did you buy it from? i am not thinking it is a persipax because that is very rare to find at a "normal" lfs or big box fish store.
keep it going, i gotta find ut what this is now.

Does it look like this fish?

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=727

Or maybe this one?

Go through a few of the photos on these profiles, because some of them look more purple than others.

Hi
i recently bought a couple of cichlids however i dont know what they are called. They are yellow/purple and one has darker coloured vertical stripes with black on the edges of its fins and the other is a lighter purple with yellow. one could possibly be the female and the other a male.
The store person wrote the name on the bag however it was thrown out. it was something mpunga. I dont know if that helps.. wish i could get a picture up!

thanks!

i tried to take a picture of it last night but it was darting around the tank and i couldnt get a clear shot of it!
ok having a really good look at it yesterday the one i think is male has a dark purple body with yellow fins with black edging. It has a bit of a pearl look to it and has dark vertical lines which are the same as its body colour just darker.
The other one which i think is the female has more of a lavender colour body with yellow fins..

does that help narrow it down??

what part is yellow? the fins? if the body is blue/purple and the fins are yellow, but the body has very faint darker vertical lines in it, then i believe what you have are called psuedotropheus of some sort. maybe a redtop zebra, acei, elongatus. there is a p. elongatus "mpanga" out there. the word mpanga in this case is referring to the place in the lake the fish are found. for example there are "mara point" peacocks, "pombo rocks" demasoni, etc, etc.
