I have a Salvanis and a Dempsey together in a 55 gallon tank and have had them for atleast a month or 2 now, And just today they starting fighting. The Dempsey has his mouth complettely around the Salvanis's mouth and they are playing like tug of war. But the really wierd part is that the Salvanis wont back down... its just keeps going in like it thinks its gonna win.

Should I separate the the two of them or is this just a territorial battle and both fish will end up ok?

If you see alot of aggression & fighting, it's better to seperate them.

some of my chiclids play lock jaw heaps of the time, depending on the aggresion it self,i would just leave them and see if they can sort it out,but if one of them is getting damaged,eg:torn fins, exposed skin,(pinky colour)scales missing, then i would use a divider,or take out the one which seems to be starting the fight and isolate him, sometimes this can work with aggresion, however it is not always 100% effective, and you have to consider with 2 aggresive fish,if u take 1 out, when it comes time to reintroduce him,you mite get aggresion problems with the 1 that was left in there getting to use to having the tank to himself.but you wont no for sure untill you try, just try to have a divider or a qt tank on hand if things dont work out.good luck
