Hi, I want a cichlid fr my 29 gallon, I would like one that is large or grow large, but not too big for the tank. I also haven't cycled or done anything with this tank yet. It was a former community tank with and Angel, some tetras and a few platies but it crashed. Anyway, it would be nice if it were low-mantinence because I'm twelve have to go to school, take care of three-week old puppies and have a life. I could dedicate about 1-2 hours to this fish per night. Any suggestions are welcome, also I need some aquascaping ideas, unless the fish would aquascape by himself.

thanks

Your size of tank would definitely not allow for a large fish, or what I consider a large fish. What do you consider large for a fish and what kind of cichlid are you interested?

With a 29, I don't think you want anything much over 5" in legth (maybe 6" if they're docile like Altolamprologus calvus or comprecisseps). After all, the width of the tank is only 12 inches.

How about a convict or two? Keyholes get about the same size. Rainbow cichlids. A jewel cichlid. Pair of angelfish.

Lots of options, but the bigger the fish the better off as a pair of a single fish.

hmmm... I've had angels before, I wanted something that I could have fun with, like one that would eat little fishies or something... I dunno, I just find those delicate fish annoying.

Jewels and convicts non-aggressive? A. calvus non-aggressive (ambush predator). Jewels and convicts are both very aggressive.

Any of the above will eat smaller fish given the chance.

How about non-cichlids like African butterfly fish (lower your water 8 inches and have a good lid)? They'll eat small surface fish, flies, crickets, meal worms, etc...

If you want something larger, get a larger tank.

some nice cichlid's that you could have are:

blue acara (aequidens pulcher) grow to around 20cm

jack dempsy (cichlasoma octofasciatum ) also to around 20 cm.

(these fish may be a bit big. but i have a bit of trouble with gallons. im used of talking litres.)

I've never kept blue acaras and have heard they usually max. at 6" and if this is the case then one or a pair would be fine in a 29. however I wouldn't keep a dempsey in a 29 as they'll grow to 8-10".

you get a male and a female and they will definitely breed. convicts are about the easiest cichlid to breed that there is.

Oooh.. Sounds fun, and I know my LFS needs more convicts, cichlids in genral actually.

Right now she spends most of her time at the front bottom of the tank, kinds like she's looking at everything going on. Anyways, she doesnt have a name yet, and I guess I could grab a male convict tommorow. They are 4.50
