Just a random question for the future when I get a larger tank. What cichlids can be kept with plants? Mainly Amazon sword, java fern etc broad leaved plants. What cichlid apart from Angelfish and any dwarf cichlids? Thanks

I have convicts in a 55 with an Amazon Sword and a Java Fern. I think the biggest thing is to keep the plants out of the Cichlids digging area if possible. My cons stick to one end of the tank and I keep my plants at the other. This is just my experince but it might work for you depending on the size of the tank you get.

Many Tanganyikans aren't bad diggers, if you're careful about species choices - my 125 Tang tank is pretty heavily planted:

Some people say severums eat plants, mine does not. And blue acaras are often plant diggers, again I've been lucky.
Krib, jewel, con, jurpari, GT...so far none of them bother plants. I say 'so far' because they're somewhat young, the GT being the largest at ~4"

Now my mystery cichlid, which is apparently a Texas hybrid, is another story. We play the plant game: he uproots, I replant, he uproots, etc etc. Very funny Leaving the plants in pots is recommended, he just pulls them out of the pots, and then digs out the pot itself.
