Looking at possibily setting up a 55gallon community tank soon. I have no experience with cichlids so I was wondering if there are any that would be compatible with your average "community" fish. I haven't settled on a stocking list yet but I was thinking just your average tetras (neons and such), guppies and possibly some other more exotic livebearers, bottom feeding cories and so forth.

The cichlids I'm looking at are possibly a pair of blue or bolivian rams and a pair or two of "Pelvicachromis taeniatus". The Pelvicachromis taeniatus are supposed to be peaceful dwarf cichlids that don't get bigger then 3" and are very colorful.

Is there anything I should look out for when mixing cichlids of this type with small community fish?

rams or keyhole cichlids should be good.

male kribs can get pretty big and nasty if you have a male and a female.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions. Looks like rams for sure.

edit... is it safe to get more then one pair of these? also, the other fish I mentioned in my first post I think is a krib but it only gets to about 3". would it be safe to get a pair of those and a pair of rams together?

I have a 46 gallon community, and was thinking the same thing - adding some blue rams. Should I only get one, or should I think about two or three? What combination of male and female (1 male, 1 female, 2 males, 2 females, etc)?

Trying to avoid aggression, if possible.

Tank mates so far would be 7 jullii cory and 6 zebra danios. I'll be adding some harlequin rasboras and maybe a pearl gourami to the mix. Still in the infancy of deciding what to stock this tank with.
