I was planning on starting a 55 gallon cichlid tank. I was wondering if anyone had advice on what cichlids I can put in there.. I know a 55 gallon isn't much space, but I would like some larger cichlids, around 8inches maybe a little more. Is there any types of cichlids I can put together that won't be overcrowded in that size of a tank and aren't way small. i'm kinda stuck in between choosing either south american or african cichlids, but I'm leaning towards African cichlids a little more. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I like peacocks but don't want to hav 2 females, 1 male. I would rather have one male peacock and another compatable cichlid of a different species. I just don't know what would be compatable. Thanks for any advice

Smaller chichlids are not that bad! They are still a lot of fun. Keyholes, German Rams, Bolivian Rams, Kribs....any of those would make a really fun tank. Yellow labs get about 5", and they are not as "bulky" as, per say, Oscars. What about Angels? They are unique cichlids and have a variety of colors and temperments. I keep them with blue rams and they are great! I have heard Jewel Cichlids are nice. I would do a lot of reseach before you get anything....check the agressiveness...I wouldn't pair smaller cichlids with large aggressive cichlids...like johannis, or many others because the smaller ones will get bullied. I think the smaller cichlids are really sweet and would be a better choice.

I've got a fever... and the only prescription... is more cowbell!

Oh, also to add, make sure to have a lot of rock and hiding places...also make sure to have at least 1" of tank per inch of fish...when you are taking up a lot of space with rock and decor, you will fit less fish...and if you have large fish, you can't have as many. With smaller fish, you can get more. YAY!

you could do two jack dempseys.....one male and one female....they are a really cool fish i have 2 of them in my tank and they get to be about 8 inches ...well the males i heard can reach 12" , you could also do something like convicts or firemouths...but if you get convicts don't get a pair (1 male and 1 female) because they will most likely pair off and take over your tank and then you really couldn't but anything else in there...

If I get a pair of Jack Dempseys, is there a chance they'll breed? I would love to have a Jack Dempsey but not if I get fry with it. Are there any kinds of bottom feeders I can put with them? What kind of substrate should I use in the tank?
