I have been told that butterfly fish carn't be keept with electric yellow's and that they can? I want to put some electric yellow's in with my butterfly in a 55gallon. Good idea or bad.

I would stay away from that combination. Electric yellows are a rough and tumble kinda fish. Butterflys are more delicate. The yellows could easily turn on one and butcher it.

No Brichardi is no good either, in fact most cichlids would be too aggressive for the butterfly fish. I'm no expert on them but I had a look at the water parameters needed by one (http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/butterfly.xml) and they are way too acidic for the african cichlids you are suggesting. if you want cichlids try something more peaceful like angels.
