I fell in love with this fish about 2 months ago, and finally went to the lfs and purchased it. I have had it three days, but noticed it does not eat very much and seems to ignore pellets all together. Any advice on this fish?

Is it a compressiceps cichlid? If it is, it is a very cool fish with a great deal of personality. I have two that will not eat pellets but love frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp. Here is the shortcut for some information on this fish.

Yes, that is what he is. He is about 5" long and bright blue. Just wondered why he was not eating. He will eat flakes. I wanted to make sure he was getting enough to eat.

Are you sure its the altolamprologus compressiceps and not the dimidiochromis compressiceps? A. comp occurs in black, yellow, some red, brown, gold, etc. D. comp has blue/black/silver. Since you said "bright blue", its probably dimidiochromis compressiceps.

These guys usually grow larger than the a. comp, about 10-12 inches, and are more aggressive. Try feeding him fresh animal matter instead if he refuses food. Of course, if hes eating flakes, continue feeding it.

I think you definately need to give it some live foods,
Both fish Inko listed would most likely take it fairly quickly.

What pellets have you tried to feed it?

The pet store you got him from most likely feed him only flakes, so thats what he'll go for. Give him some time and let him settle in and then try to introduce pellets.
Keeping in mind a pellet should be no larger than the fishes eye.

Good to see you got the "one" you really wanted

doesnt sound like a alto compressicept.. could of course be a dimi.. some photo would help id it

Eating will come with time.. when i first got my Aulonocara baenschi they would eat nothing but colorbits.. and wouldnt touch the small pellets.. but with some time they got used to them and love it as well as being more comferable in there new home.. frozen brine shrimp is something they will also love. Just give it some time as the other guys have said..

good luck

Just a little advice:

Get it to eat pellets or sinking pellets before trying live foods, other wise it may only eat live foods. Keep on feeding pellets and such so they slowly accept it.

My fish is the "d" type. He does seem to try and eat the pellets, but maybe they are too big. Hakari is the brand we use. I will try and feed him some of the smaller ones we feed our angels.

Thanks guys!

I have that exact fish and he is also fussy on pellets but will eat flakes, grubs, and frozen bloodworms.

Did you try any of those?

Try some freeze dried or frozen krill (pacifica type). I can almost guarantee he will devour it. And, it is one of the most healthiest foods you can give him. It will also help to bring out the reds that he will be showing soon, in some of his fins.
