I have a 29 gallon tank. 30Lx17.5Hx12.25W
It will be cycled and planted. I'm just planning atm.
Fluval 2
50% Flora max 50% flourite
65 watt Compact flourescent

I'll be making pvc hiding places in the future depending on what I decide to get.

I've been finding conflicting information and answers about whether angels and keyholes will get along in a tank of this size?

If they do, would only 2 keyholes be best? I'm open to other suggestions and I'm also very open to only 1 angel if aggression from breeding would be a problem for the keyholes (from the angels).

I believe that in a tank this size, agression will be a problem. You've gotta look at it like this, 30" of run space vs. roughly 8-12 inches of territorial claim, 2 angels and thats roughly 24 inches of tank space that is going to be claimed right there with the inevitable squabble over overlaps and whatever remains. This is just my opinion as I have never kept keyholes, but I know angels are a bit testy at times. If it were me and I wanted to attempt the mix I think I would go minimum of 55 gal with only a pair of each. However with that said, you could always try the crowding method. By placing 4-5 angels in the tank with the keyholes you may be able to keep the angels busy amongst themselves to the point where the keyholes go unnoticed. It really comes down to the personality of the fish in question. If you get agressive ones, well, nothing will work. If you get passive ones anything is liable to work. Angel fish are a tough call as they dont just hang out on the bottom of the tank, they are true whole tank occupants. Most other cichlids on the other hand are content to cruise the bottom regions and rarely venture near the upper reaches of the tank unless stressed or feeding.
Once again, just my opinion having never owned keyholes.

I would only do 1 angel in a 29g unless you are doing a breeding pair with no or barely any other tank mates. A non breeding pair will set up territories and argue over the tank and a breeding pair will be even more territorial but all their agression will be toward tankmates instead of each other.

A 29 is about right for a pair of full grown angels. You could add some smallish bottom dwellers 6 small Cories or maybe a pair of Blue Rams but that's about it. Bear in mind if the Angels form a breeding pair other fish may suffer.

Have fun, Mike

maybe you should go with the keyholes, i have 4 in my current tank they are very very peaceful, and don't argue about territory, maybe i just have very placid keyholes i dunno, but they are extremly peaceful, even with 13 tiger barbs darting around in the tank with them
