Is it a good idea to feed oscars crickets from the pet store?

I do and mine loves'em. We get crickets because we have Geckos so I have a supply on hand. I wouldn't feed him crickets you caught outside because they might have been exposed to pesticides or fertilizers.

to an extend, crickets make a better food than most feeder fish.

I dump 2-3 dozen in the my oscar/severum tank about once a month. Good variety and they are full of protein. They are always store bought, to minimize chance of pesticides etc. Someone on this board once compared them to feeding them a big mac <g>.

Our oscars loved crickets but the crickets escaped and now we hear chirping in every corner of the house at night
They really love the live mealworms and they're much easier to keep (in the fridge)

Mine loves crickets... But he goes ballistic over live earthworms, hold one in front of the tank and he's ramming the glass trying to get it.

mealworms and waxworms have the ability to eat out of what ate them, and cichlids suck the food down then eats the food. i wouldnt feed my cichlids meal or wax because of that.

plus once a cricket goes to the bathroom they lose all protien value so its like eating a skeleton.

Keep in mind that crickets really dont have to much valuable nutrition. Try mysis shrimp as they are healthy for fish and most fish love em

i'm pretty sure wax worms and meal worms don't survive very long under water...i wouldn't worry about them eating the inside organs of an Oscar. Many lizards swallow them whole as well and i haven't noticed any adverse affects. and besides, their jaws are very strong.
