I do not have sand, but in one corner of my tank they keep going back to that area and playing around with gravel. It seems like there are many different responses to the place where rams prefer to place their eggs. Should i buy a piece of slate to stick in that area? Or a mini flowerpot? Or just leave the gravel? What other ways are there to stimulate mating? Thanx for all your responses!

Rams dig small holes in the sand for the fry.

It sounds like you have a male and a female. Rams do not dig holes. If you do not have any you should add some flat rocks or slate to the bottom of the tank. When they are ready to breed you will notice them cleaning the rock of their choice off.

Well when they start shacking next to each other, that usually means a mating dance, but what I would look for is breeding tudes and if the pair is digging any holes.
