Does anyone, other than myself own these Demon Earth eaters? They are very interesting, but i am confused on one thing: which is their scientific name, is it jurupari(sp) or Daemon? Geophagus

actually the common "Demon eartheater" is Satanoperca jurapari. They used to be classified as Geophagus but were moved. There is also S. daemon and I believe one or 2 other Satanoperca species but the most common I'm pretty sure is jurapari. I don't own any. I did at one time have Geophagus brasiliensis and I almost picked up some Geophagus sp. 'Bahia Red' but ran out of tank space.

Hi,

Can't say I've seen that Demon before but I do own a Geophagus Surinamensis. Had it for about 5 years. Current size is just over 12" long. Very friendly to fish smaller than itself (even a 2cm checker barb or cory), but can get a little aggressive (territorial) to fish equal or larger than itself, but never causes damage.

I also owned a 12" Geophagus brasiliensis, but that became too aggressive in my community tank. It's now in a display tank at one of my LFS.

Some old pictures. I should take some new ones..
Surinamensis 01
Surinamensis 02
Surinamensis 03

This is a little off topic I guess but thought I might put this reply in as there doesn't seem a huge amount of interest in earth eaters and there's no mention of Surinamensis in the Profiles, but I find them fascinating.
