I saw two species of the Texas cichlid at the Cichlid Central website. How do I know which one I have????

Here are the two I found:

Pearlscale Texas

Green Texas

How old and what size is your texas?

there are several photos of each in that drop down menu under the photo that you gave

if your texas is mature enough you should be able to tell, if it mostly blue it probably the pearl scale or if it is more on the green side it should be the green , pretty hard to tell on juvies if yours is a young one

good luck

Joe

The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an bacon and egg breakfast: the chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed'."

Mine is about 4 inches, and is a light blue in colour ATM, however, I wouldnt be surprised if he decides to turn green. Because he is skittish and new to the tank, his colours may be light temporarily. I am going to try and get a good picture of him (if he comes out of hiding) and post it.

if the fish are pure, the spots on a carpintis should be noticeably larger whereas a real texas has a lot more smaller spots. however, sometimes it can be difficult to tell unless you have specimens of each species next to each other.

also, the green texas is the carpintis or the Pearlscale cichlid. the blue texas, or simply the texas cichlid, is the cyanoguttatus.

Here are some pictures of my Texas. Hopefully this will make it easier to identify if he is a Pearlscale or the Texas Cichlid.
