My roomate has upgraded his tank to a fifty five for his flower horn. that gives me back my tank. i want to put a red devil or a jack dempsey in it. i know i cant get a red devil because they will grow to big for what i want to do and i already have a wolf cichlid. two big tanks would be to much for me. so i really want to hear all of your Jack stories, any other suggestion for a predator fish that would fit in a thirty gallon would be great, but i want a fish who is not shy.

Thanks

Nick

Well your pushing it with a Jack but I think if you had a lot of swimming space it would do fine. Jacks are really nice and I have never found the Jacks I have had shy and this one male I had would always take food out of my hand.

I'll never understand how Jack Dempseys got their name...

I heard a story of one that got an infection because of repeated attacks by Serpae Tetras.

You would be a little cramped with a jack dempsey in a 30g, But they are great additions to an aquarium. they have great color, but aren't as predatory as u might think. They are more territorial than predatorial.

I'd recommend at the least either a tank with footprint 48" x 12" or 36" x 18". 48" x 18" would be awesome for a Jack dempsey but some say it would be overkill. IMO, there is no such thing as overkill.

Jason

ps. I hope you have a 300+ gallon tank/pond lined up for that dovii in about a year.

I AM NOT CONCERNED WITH MY TANK SIZE!!!!!! i have known a lot of people who have had jacks in thirty gallons, i just want to know if they are cool fish, and if they will beat the crap out of other fish.

I'm sorry to hear you're not concerned about the tank size. I know a lot of people that have kept oscars in tanks ranging from 20-40 gallons. Just because a lot of people do it doesn't make it right or good for the fish.

Anyway, IME Jack Dempseys do not live up to their pugnacious reputation. I would guess in a 30 gallon tank a JD would probably be rather skittish and hide most of the time, especially if you keep him alone.

First off, there is no need to get angry. Secondly, I agree with Jason that there is no such thing as overkill. Thirdly, JD's are very skittish when kept alone and cramped. They love being in pairs. Also if cramped for space, they have a way of making fish they find annoying go bye bye. This is not that they are mean, but cramped, and territorial. In a 30g they would have a territory over half the tank.

Actually in a 30 gallon a JD's territory would be the entire tank.

About a 5-inch specimin would have that large of a territory, but a 1.5-3 probably wouldn't IME. But in a 20g like he was suggesting, It would be the entire tank and the airspace above it.

no jack for me, i figured that the popular opinion was thirty gallons was to small, so i bought a green spotted puffer instead.

30 gallons is a good size for a green spotted puffer. I just hope you made the water brackish before adding the puffer...unless the lfs you bought the puffer from kept it in freshwater. if that is the case, the puffer will eventually need to be acclimated to brackish, and a lot of people keep them in full marine conditions as they reach maturity.

About a 5-inch specimin would have that large of a territory, but a 1.5-3 probably wouldn't IME.

When I said that about the JD having the entire 30 gallon as its territory, I meant a larger JD. I should have been more specific.

I am glad you decided not to go with a Jack Dempsey. I wish you well with the puffer.

Jason, its just a simple miscommunication, no biggie.
