Hey everyone,

I have a pair of convicts that I am trying to breed. I placed in a small flowerpot today, because they kept moving rocks around at some places, but kept bouncing back and forth between them, so I figured they didnt like any of them, and in all the pics i've seen they bred in flowerpots. I placed the pot outwards facing the front of the tank so i can see inside; is this a good idea? Or should I face it away so that I can't see them?

Here are pics of the setup (the male fish is the black one in the first pic)

Convicts will breed just about anywhere they can. You should have no problem with them in any way you place the pot. However, most fish prefer a "safe" feeling cave to spawn and lay their eggs. So, I am sure they would "prefer" the pot turned so you cannot see them and they cannot see you. They will feel better about protecting their eggs and fry if they feel more hidden from you. Many times placing the pot facing foward, you will find the fish will in turn lay their eggs on the back side of the pot. Because they are hiding the eggs from view, and thus protecting them from preditors.

thanks, I was actually thinking about it and it would probably be better if I moved the pot behind the rock decoration shown in the picture. That way they would feel secure, and I would still be able to peek from the side of the tank to see what was going on. They dont seem to be going crazy about the pot as of now though, they are more interested in a hollow decoration I have in there. Thanks for the reply.

if they do spawn look as much as you want but try not to mess with them to much, the first time mine spawned i kept moving the rock from the front of the flowerpot to see them(first lot of fry),and in the end they moved them around the tank like five times.i dont think that this does them any harm(moving the fry around)but they probly feal safer undisturbed.good luck.
