I remember reading that some Cichlids don't need a higher PH. All they need is somewhere around 7.0. But I don't remember what kinds. Are Electric Yellow Labs one of these? Does anyone know of some others?

In the wild, Electric yellows are found in waters with ph of 8.2 if not slightly higher. However, most EY's in the hobby are far removed from the wild and will adapt to a wide range of water parameters. I'd be more concerned about the water you keep them in being close to the water they were raised in.

Really, I thought normal tap water was around 7.0. Oh well, maybe I should buy some pH test strips. That might help.

Africans need a pH of 8.2.
Only distilled water has a neutral pH, other types depend on location.

Rift lake African cichlids do best with a higher ph. But there are plenty of other cichlids, those from America and some from West Africa, that like the lower ph.

In the wild Labs live in water with a pH of 7.7-8.6, however, they will still be happy and even spawn in water with a pH of 7.1-7.6. It's not a good idea to keep them in water with a pH of less than 7.0. They like slightly soft (110ppm) water.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. So the South American Cichlids are the ones I should be looking at, OK.
