Hi all,
I have a tank ready to take some (6-10) small Electric Yellows.

What I want to know is where can I get some really good EY's in Melbourne Victoria.

I have checked out my LFS (Glen Waverley, Balckburn Sth areas)and he has some but the colour of them is a bit washed out.
Now this may be true for juvenile EY's, say 2cm in size, I don't know

I have visited a couple of other LFS's and found one with a single male about 3-4cm in size and he looked wonderful, with a really deep but brilliant yellow colour, good strong black markings on dorsal and anal fins plus two egg spots; another in the same tank wasn't as deeply coloured but still more catching than the washed out juveniles. The cost $25 AUD.
A bit much for my poor pocket and also a bit big as I would like to be able to grow them out and then select several to keep and trade the 'rejects' for credit.

Can someone advise me if the colour they have when juveniles is directly related to the adult colour depth?

Where in Melbourne is a good supplier of deep coloured EY's?

Does anyone on this site and in Melbourne breed them with a view of selling them?

Price is important but colour quality is more important.

hi when they got older and more mature they will become more yellow in body my small electras werent that yellow but they are now beacuse of there size so what im a saying is that colour is that important when they are young as long as that arent a real pale yellow and if the top fin is really black they will become an awsome yellow, look in the yellow pages for aquarium shops ans give them a call thats what i do

victoria has two aquarium societies, look them up on the internet. I have seen some pretty ordinary e. yellows in LFS's and the aquarium society will have a bunch of ppl who breed them. Also colour is important when young. Shop around and get some bright yellows ones. when the reach a good size they become even better

$25 for 3-4 cm seems to be "very expensive"....better check more places....here in Sydney it's about half the price in average of different fish stores around...

and from my own experience...I have a slightly pale yellow and even it has grown double in size the colors dun seems to get much more intense...so perhaps the colour they have when juveniles is some how related to the adult colour depth....that's my opinion...

I started with four Yellow Labs (2 male and 2 female) and one year later I have more than a dozen...they are relentless breeders. So the reason I'm replying is that I have so many different looking ones. The color of the males does seem to deepen as they get older, but the females seem to retain their original color, which is usually (but not always) more pale. The larger original female was and is still pale, while the smaller original female has always been much brighter and I sometimes even confuse her with the smaller males in the tank.

Electric yellows are surposed to be bright yellow. The paler one are due to breeding. Shop around and get the bright ones. If they cost you $20 Its worth it

i live in melbounre and i have found a few good fish suppliers around the place espically in cichlids like electric yellows. Theres a good shop in preston, not sure of the name but its abig and blue look it up sometime if u want, They are expensive but they got some good fish. I had electric yellows aroun 4 cms and they where as yellow as yellow gets nice bright colours it worth the extra wait and money to get the better looking ones

Just to finish off this thread,

I found some really nice EY's at Boronia Aquarium in where else but Boronia.
They were well priced @ $9.50 and of a really good colour, the best I have found.
I was surprised at the differences in colour depth at the 7 shops I went to and some of them weren't what I would call "Local", Boronia being one of the not so close shops.
I also need to get a replacement part for my Eheim double cut off tap and they were the most helpful in that regard.
So if you're in the area of Boronia go and have a look around, hopefully you'll be as impressed with them as I was.
BTW I have no affiliation with them at all, just like to put in a good word when I think someone deserves it.
