i was wondering what the easiest and best way is to tell a female yellow from a male??
can anyone help?

You can tell by looking at its tail(caudal fin), if it have tiny neon shiny freckles than it will be a male, if there are none its a female.

I have also heard that male develop the black colouring on their fins underneath their bodies.

Males also have more black on their dorsal fins than females and might have some around their eyes.

The black fins are what i have always gone for when selecting labs and so far i seem to have bought correctly when choosing which sex i want.

All of these suggestions are somewhat true, but not reliable. Electric yellows are very difficult to sex. Sometimes an electric yellow will appear to have the characteristics of a male but will then end up with a mouthfull of fry! Venting is the best way to sex them, but you have to know what you're doing. Mostly it's not important, just get a group and let them grow up, breeding behaviour will then let you know what is what.

Ok the guy at the LFS gave me what he thinks is a female... he was right last time so im hoping! i was just a little worried cos it isnt that big and when they are little its even harder to tell!
i really want to breed them and so far i have 2 females and one male ....
is this enough or should i have one more female?
i have a 20g tank.....

i never realised there were so many ways to tell!
ive checked all these things against the yellows and so far everything fits! the eyes were really obvious!

those are all for the most part false suggestions there are two different ways too tell either watch their behavior and you should be able to tell or vent them here is a link for venting
