![]() | Empty 10 whispering Shellies |
Mike R![]() Fish Addict Posts: 593 Kudos: 830 Votes: 322 Registered: 27-Jul-2004 ![]() ![]() | Hi everyone I've got a 10 gal. in the garage whispering to me.The trouble is the LFSs in my area don't have any Shellies. I've been looking on Aquabid but they all have scientific names. I need some names of Shellies that'll coexist in a 10. Are all neolamprologus Shellies? I also need to know how many pairs I could keep in a 10. I read the article at the top of this forum and I can get everything I need but how to keep the water hard and ph high with water changes. Do I just do very small ones. Thanks, Mike |

No, not all Neolamprologus sp. are shell dwellers. Look into Neolamprologus Brevis, Neolamprologus Multifasciaturs and Neolamprologus Similis. I also need to know how many pairs I could keep in a 10. Two pairs would be the most i'd put in a 10g. Less is best, though. I read the article at the top of this forum and I can get everything I need but how to keep the water hard and ph high with water changes. Do I just do very small ones. Doing water changes won't raise your pH and hardness. Adding calcerous rock (limestone, sandstone etc) and shells will buffer your water. You can also buy water buffers that are designed for rift lake cichlids that'll do the same thing. What's the pH and hardness of your local water? Water changes with tanganyikans should always be small, but frequent. |

Will the buffers raise the ph? If not are commercial ph increasers best or something like baking soda? Thanks for the reply, Mike |

Hardness can be increased slightly by using crushed coral as substrate; don't break yourself struggling to get the hardness up. With a ph of 7.6 its unlikely the water is very soft. x |
