If any of you read the bottom-feeder forum, you might think I've chosen strangely hard-to-feed fish for a beginner. You're probably right.

I have two 1-inch rams. Their behavior in terms of feeding is a little off from what I expected. In particular, I figured they'd be surface-feeders, like Tetras, so they'd just come up once they figured out there was food up there. My tetras sure didn't have any trouble figuring this one out and now they always eat quickly.

Since the rams don't come to the surface, I've been dropping flake into the filter outflow, so it drifts down to the bottom. Usually seeing some food falling down gets their attention, and they grab some. Sometimes they spit some out, but I think they are eating. They'll also suck it off of the gravel on the bottom.

Is this normal behavior?

On a side note, if the two fish raise their fins at each other in a threatening posture, and then try to ram each other a few times before backing off, is it safe to say they're both male?

try feeding them sinking pellets and bloodworms if you want them to get fed. For sexing its simple; look for a big black tuft at the front of the dorsal, if you see that its male. Check for a red blushing spot somewhere beside the pectoral, if thats there then its probably female. based on behaviour, I'de say both males.
