I have an Oscar in a 55 and would like to put a pair of Firemouths with him. Do you guys think this is a good match? The Oscar is pretty mellow, I have an Angel in with him now. I already have the firemouths in a 29, they are about 1.5" long. I plan to grow them until they are big enough to put with Oscar. Also, will they spawn in a 55 with an oscar for a tankmate?

how big is your oscar Mike R? depending upon the size of the tank and the size of your oscar determines if your are capable of having any more fish as a tank mate...

I'm not real familiar with firemouths breeding(I only have 1), but don't they get kinda territorial during that time? If so, might be a problem. Nice oscar may get ticked at being run off.

55 gallons will barely be big enough for the oscar as he gets bigger. I'd recommend keeping the fm's in a separate tank or getting the oscar a larger tank and giving the 55 to the fm's.

Is a 29 big enough for the firemouths? Also, how old do they have to be before I can tell if I have a male and a female? Males have longer, pointier fins, is that correct?

Think a 29g may be a bit on the small side especially if you want them to grow to full potential size (better for your fish). Females should have almost squared off fins and less colouration than males (as far as I know)Hope its helpful

I honestly don't think the red coloration has anything to do with gender. I think it is more to do with the quality of the specimen and what region its ancestors were collected from. Firemouths have been collected from several different locations and there are noticeable differences in coloration and some differences in body shape in firemouths collected from different regions.

The tank is too small to house anything other than a pair of oscars long term. Even at 8", it is seriously big enough to not want the fires in its space.
