![]() | Gender Confused Blue Ram |

I got my pair of blue rams last weekend, at least, they looked like a pair for the first few days. Then the 'male' started dissplaying some rather feminine qualities, ie, he got irridesant blue spots on his black spot. Now this was one of the 'sure fire' ways of sexing blue rams ive found online, females have blue spots on their black on, males have elongated dorsal rays. Next problem is that this fish has both of these traits. ![]() Thanks for the input. Matt ![]() |

I think you are right; the blue spots in the black dot are the way of identification. I seem to remember that the elongated dorsal rays (first 3 or so) show up in females as well, assumingly because they are farm bred now. Honestly, I think you will have no choice but to wait and see what will happen. That’s all I know, Ingo Last edited by LITTLE_FISH at 15-Sep-2005 04:27 ![]() |

I have a harem of german blues (and congrats on joining the club !) Have a pairoff occuring too ![]() The 3 famales all have a long ray on their top fin, so can't really go by that all the time. The male has the largest ray though, he is also larger then the females. You are correct in blue dots within the black spot, those should be female. (unless your rams are hormone pumped, or fed foods containing 'stimulants') those fish can fool you) My females also have a pinkish/purplish belly. Hope this helps ! Recommend checking into where your rams originated from. (fish farm, wild caught, domestic bred, etc) DaFish Last edited by DaFishMan at 21-Sep-2005 17:47 The Amazon Nut... |
