Wow havent posted here in forever... :\ Anyways im going to be starting a new tank in a few months and im already thinking of a plan. Ive never done a full cichlid tank before but have always wanted to. I'm thinking of between 29-35G. Not quite sure which im going to get. Around there give or take a few gallons. The fish Im thinking of getting are:
-3 Electric Yellow Labs
-1 Firemouth Cichlid
-1 Acei

I might substitute the acei for a convict or something. Anyway the main thing im wondering is if these fish can get along ok? I know ph and everything would be fine as firemouths can be quite tolerant of the higher phs needed for the labs and such and so can convicts if I switch. Does this sound good?

I think you might want to rethink your stocking. Have you read much about mbuna? Firemouths may be able to tolerate the pH and the hardness that the labs and acei require, but their "languages" are completely different and, most people find, incompatible. You're much better off just deciding whether you want SA/CA cichlids or mbuna - and, given the size of the tank, the SA/CAs would be a much smarter bet. If you go with the 29 I wouldn't recommend mbuna at all.

In a 29, nothing really. A harem of yellow labs would be more than enough for the tank size.

You could most likely keep a small harem of labs and a small harem of acei in there, with plenty of rock.

Correct. A pair of cons would surely kill the labs, and a group of labs with a single con would likely stress it to death, or close.

I say get 3 labs, and 3 Acei as mentioned, in a 40g.
You might still have problems in the long run but it's really the best mix for that tank.

Though if your interested in breeding them i'd get 5-7 labs in the 40g. They always breed best in a single species tank
