Hi! I have a pair of rams in my 55 gallon with my angels. They have been there about a week and when I got them everything was fine their colours were awsome. But now their coulors faded and one of them is at the bottom breathing heavily and her gills are inflated. Whats wrong and why are they loosing their color?

Sometimes when rams are purchased, they can be shy. Rams tend to take a while to get used to a new tank, they can take up to a month to feel fully at home. When they feel comfortable in their environment, their colors will brighten up, and they will become a lot more sociable.

You should buy a test kit, and use it to test your water. They are really handy, and will quickly help you determine if anything is wrong with your tank's water. Have you added anything to your tank recently, or changed anything around? Maybe we can get to the bottom of this.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Inflamed gills, isn't that a sign of ammonia in the water? And i will repeat this, get a test kit! Sometimes it is the water that causes death and sometimes it is just a bad source. Also, if something IS worng with the water, if you test it and find out now you will most likely save your fish

Rams are very sensative to nitrAtes, as well as ammonia like any other normal fish, but nitrAtes are the real concern. You can save fish form ammonia, but you would have to take action quickly.
