Get some Neolamprologus Brichardi (Lake Tanganijka) & do lots of rock work, with some caves & a sandy bottom.

i 2nd the brichardi but go with a single pair to start, they will fill in the tank with a colony in no time.

Another good choice would be a colony of Julies (Julidochromis). Could even put in some Shellies with them.

Single species of just about any Malawi/Mbuna would work.

Some smaller South American like Blue ram or Bolivians rams woudl work as pairs. Pair of Kribs. Pair of angels ( yes angels are cichlids most people forget )

There are alot of options these are just the highlights. narrow it down some and we can help ya out more

How would this work? 2 Angels, 3 Blue Rams, 7 Cardinals, 5 Cories.
