I just got a new 4" tiger oscar. Hes in his own 55g tank with some cories (who will soon be moved) and a ram (whos tank is being set up now). What are some good foods to feed him, he wont accept flakes. Is he big enough for small feeders? thanks

It's normal for new fish to be a little stressed out when just moved to a new aquarium or home. Many fish will not eat for several days at first. Oscars are usually pigs who will eat everything though.
As for food, I'd recommend a good quality cichlid pellet, like Hikari or Omega1 maybe...if they make it.

I use Hikari with Nutrafin Cichlid food + pea's as their staple diet, and my guys love it. Very healthy, and very BIG Feeders and live food are a treat, not to be used as a staple. I also use frozen fish blocks, and if you search this site, you will find a few receipies.

Happy Oscaring!

Be careful about starting him out on feeders ... if you do soon hell only accept live foods. Use a floating pellet ... if he doesnt eat them in 5 mins remove food with a net. When it gets hungry enough itll go for the pellets. At that point id start to ocassionaly give him treats of frozen BS, feeders (preferably raised by you), crickets, beef heart, freeze dried krill and mysis shrimp, and ghost shrimp. Dont want a food that is too high in protein as it can result in hole in the head disease.

Oh if you only got him yesterday he is still checking out his new digs. Give him a day or two.

I think the flakes won't be of much interest to him so lucky you have the pellets.

Hope you are soon best buddies and he comes up to eat out of your hand and get a scratch under the chin...
