Keyholes can stand a little higher pH than the dwarfs. Another great fish is the Bolivian Ram. Easy to keep, and no problem with the other fish you have. Later

Your dH seems a little high for the Bolivian Rams.
Your dH is also a bit high for the Apistogramma cacatuoides, or your pH a bit low.
The dH is also a little bit high for the Keyholes.

As far as if you want to change that to make it more acceptable for them is up to you. And wether or not they are fish which could adapt well to a different range of water parimeters is something someone else would have to tell yeah.

Well, I have a generic gravel substrate, two rocks for smallish fish to hide in, and several plastic (but no live) plants. Temp is 75 degrees F, dh about 20, and ph around 6.6.

sirbrooks: Couple things I wanted to ask first.
How is your tank set up, in other words, what do you have for substrate, ornaments, live plants, etc.
Also what are your water parimeters? pH, temp, dH?

I am thinking perhaps, as far as small cichlids go...

Bolivian Ram (Microgeophagus altispinosa) 1 or 2 Pairs of these.

(Apistogramma cacatuoides) 1 male to 1 or 3 females.

Keyhole Cichlid (Aequidens maronii) Keep 1 pair.

These would all look good with your emeralds. And you would end up with about 14-18" of fish for the 20G which should be just fine provided you have adiquite filtration and keep up with your maintainance.

After all the advice I've gotten, I still can't decide between maybe a pair of keyholes, or a pair of dwarf cockatoo cichlids. Does anyone have any experiences with either?

Fires don't get too big and if thats the other fish with the corys, it'll look stunning.

Yeah, I'm not crazy enough to get a convict. The firemouths look good, but they get a little too big for my liking. The flag is small, but doesn't look that nice. I like the cockatoo dwarf cichlid, also because it doesn't stay on the bottom of the tank.

Don't put a convict in! I wouldn't go for a pair of kribs (as previously suggested) either - when they breed (which they more than likely will), they'll cause mayhem in such a small tank. If you are removing the barb and the angel, take them to your LFS, they should take them off you and offer you some food in exchange for them. You could try the flag or firemouth cichlid.

I have a 20 gallon freshwater community tank with four emerald catfish, a small angelfish, and a gold barb. Are there any cichlids that could be kept with these fish, and remain on the smallish side? I like the bolivian rams, but I've gotten conflicting info on them. Thanks!

I will probably take out the barb and angel, but the angelfish came with my tank when I bought it from someone. What should I do with it?

Your 20gal. tank is already stocked. 4 Emerald Corydoras & the Angel is the limit. If possible take the Gold Barb back to the LFS & maybe get another Cory.

Kribensis get quite aggressive when breeding.

Get rid of the angel. 20G is too small. 29G is the absolute min and some people even think thats too small. Considering angels can get like 8 inches long and like 12 inches tall.

Keyhole cichlids are just about the most peaceful cichlid you'll ever find, and they stay relatively small (around 4".

Also, males and female look nearly exactly the same, so you don't have go and look for a male hoping that it will be prettier. Both sexes will develop beautiful, long filaments off of their dorsal and anal fins.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Oh I would say be careful with Kribensis I just had to get rid of 2 as they nipped everything in my tank and did not get on with corys they don't seem to like other bottom dwellers. I might have been unlucky as some say they are fine.

I have two ornaments with hiding places for smaller fish, and five plastic plants, I don't have the right substrate, lighting, etc. for real ones.

Are the rams very territorial? I really like my cories, and don't want anything to happen to them.

Well the angel might be a little aggresive towards other cichlids in a smaller tank. I would take out the angel and the barb and put a trio of keyholes or a pair of rams.
