My friends severums bred, we thought they were both males but turns out they laid eggs. What color will the babies be?!? I'm curious to know never knew that they would mix breed.

well im going back to when i did genetics in biology but the green sev should have the dominant genes so most of them should be green but some of them could be gold

I think that most, if not all of the severums will turn out green.

Like greenmonkey51 said, the green color trait is dominant so most likely more then 50% of the spawn would be green, but the other 50% cuold be gold or green. You just have to wait 'till they grow up I guess. Great job to your friend for getting them to spawn though They aren't the easiest fish to spawn

i dont think that it would be half and half if they have all green trait genes and all yellow trait genes. then they would be green. but if either had a recessive gene in them then a few would end up gold

I am pretty sure that the recessive gene will show up 25% of the time... so 25% should be gold.

I have no idea what the green/gold proportions will be. I would, however like to know if the eggs hatch. I have 2 pair of sevs and 1 of the males is gold. My local sev expert told me that green/gold pairings rarely result in furtile eggs.

If it's actually controlled by a single gene, then Greenmonkey is correct. If the green Sev has the recessive gold-color gene, then roughly half of the fry will be pure gold. Otherwise, they'll all be green. Now, if those fry happen to interbreed, then a quarter of the grandchildren will be gold.

Most color traits, however, aren't controlled by a single gene, so it probably isn't that easy.
