I had my lfs order me 15 black convicts to come in with thier weekly shipment... for a 55 gallon to breed/have. I swear I cannot find a male amonst them. What are the chances of that? And do you guys think its a conspiracy so that I cannot breed feeders and force me to abort breeding. Ever heard of order placers specially requesting only female or males on a fish order.

Would like your comments...I'm a tab bit ticked

Simply go trade them at another store..i'm sure a reasonable LFS would let you, or you can pay them a small fee...that way you get a larger gene pool also.

see thats the thing they are rare here in lexington...thats why i had him special order them...only found them at 2 other places, petsmarts...and they are usually infestted with some kinda ick or bacteria, I do plan on searching for a male amonst them not with hospitalizing them first... it just stinks i spent $22 and got the bum deal...there might be 1 or 2 males guess Ill have to wait and see... maybe some males have slight markings on thier bellies also when young...and its throwing me off but for the most part all have orange speckles on thier bellies and sloped heads...

i jumped the gun, there appears to be 3 pairs pairing off...I think they were too new to the tank for thier real colors to shine through.

Glad to hear that you've got the pairs starting.

If you DO need a male, try posting in the Watchagot post in classified. I'm sure someone has convicts.

Actually all the same sex from a spawn can happen in some species if water temperature is either too cold or too hot, however I do not really know if it is true with Convicts. The other problem is size, the males tend to grow faster than the females in a lot of species, a breeder may collect all the "large" babies and my have to set on the smaller ones until they are a little larger. This can cause someone to get the same sex fish. If I purchase from a breeder I always ask for mixed sizes, you have a better chance to get those pairs that way.
