Strangely, my 5 inch johanni is beating the crap out of my heater (I thought this was isolated to large oscars and dempseys...). Any suggestions that dont involve big ugly PVC pipes?

You could get a heater gaurd. Its a metal cage that surrounds your heater. And there may even be a plastic one. You could also try a heater cable but im not to sure if those things work to well

Tetratech makes a HOB filter with the heater in it. Or if the one you have is submersable, turn it sideways and put it close to the bottom with some decoations and/or plants in front of it.

As suggested above. The heater gaurd instead of the pvc pipe. Here is the link for one example.........

My johanni has also taken a disliking to my heater but he just pulls the suction cups off. I finally just set my driftwood in front of it so it's not as noticeable and he gave it up to destroy some plants instead.

Have you noticed if he attacks the ehater all the time or only when it comes on? It could be that there is a short in the heater and is giving your fish a small jolt. I had that problem in my oscar tank with an old heater ... once i replaced the heater they stopped attacking it.

BTW i dont really recommend sticking your hand in the tank to check it out if this may be suspect ... 110 can make your hand tingle for a while.

If your using an external filter, try an external heater made by Hydor. http://www.hydor.it/index_en.htm ETH 200/300.

i got a heater guard at walmart for like 5$...although my oscars never really paid much atention to it in the first place.
the heater guards arent ugly at all IMO. mine is black, and you really cant see it very well against the back ground.
