Adorable! I'd have a bazillion of 'em, but I'm not allowed near the ram tanks in my LFS.... *sighs* Do you have a picture of that plant? I've never heard of it.

I walk into a LFS to pick up a plant for my tank. I'm having a great time looking around when I spot this gorgeous little Ram. Now I don't really have space for new fish but one look at her face and I melted . So I walk out of the store with a sailboat plant and a new cichlid which I was never intending to get in the first place . Am I a shocker or what!!!
She lives with 4 female betta splendens and 2 bristlenose catfish.

why not build a hood? i just built 1 on friday, only took like 2 hours because i had to track down U nails and wait for the glue to dry and some how, i even made it snap in

i used an old flimsy mirror border, and cut it with a steak knife (who says im not inventive) then cut the screen accordingly

Oh I forgot to add a pic of the sailboat plant, can you give me some time with that, I'm flat out at the moment but I'll get around to it eventually. Sorry.

Errr give or take ... It should take no more than a month and a half for me to get the big tank over to my house and up and running again, that would be the absolute max. Until then I'll keep an eye on the quality of the water in my 5 gallon, but so far I've had absolutely no issues with the quality surprisingly, I think that the frequent small changes of the water is working quite well to maintain the water in addition with a good filter system.
I was going to move my little ram into the 7 gallon to releave the pressure in the 5 gallon but the neons in that tank fell ill, so looks like my Ram will have to stay with my bettas .
The other alternative is to get out my lidless emergency 10 gallon tank, But it's not a very safe option given that there are 3 children under the age of 5 who frequently visit my house plus the tendancy for fish to jump!
At this stage I'll keep her where she unless she shows obvious signs of distress or the quality of the water drops. But I always have that alternative if worst comes to worst!

You scared me for a second....
How long until you move the fish. They can last in a 5, but not for very long.

Oh and some clarification
1) The 10L tank or 2.5 gallon tank isn't mine it was one that a couple purchased to put 10 goldfish in when I was at a LFS.
2) the 20L = 5 gallons (not 4.2) is the one I have my fish in currently and there are now 3 bettas in it not 4. I removed one because it became lethargic and I suspect she may be ill but looking at her now I think she's egg bound and that's why she was looking sick.
3) The 2' tank I am getting soon will be I'm guessing apporximately 20 - 25 gallons.
4)and the new tank I bought 2 days ago is actually 7 gallons, this is the one I am currently cycling.
My bristle nose will move into the 20 gallon tank along with my ram and maybe some friends as I realise bristle nose grow to a reasonably large size.
The betta females will keep the 5 gallon tank.
So even though that 5 gallon I know is overstocked at the moment I stress it is only temporary I was never intending to keep them all there. I generally go by the rule buy fish now, find room later. I shouldn't, but I know I am not the only one guilty of this, what more can I say, I love my companion animals.
I have 16 other tanks holding single male bettas ranging from 1 gallon to 2.5 gallons. Obsessive??? who me!

Errr lets see, 3.8L = 1 gallon so my tank is approximately 4.2 gallons, not to worry I bought a new 6 gallon tank for my ram to move into and there are a few neon tetra buddies in there already till I get the tank fully cycled, but it shouldn't take long since I used water from an already cycled aquarium. I also have another 2' aquarium on the way in a month so there'll be more then enough space to distribute my fish quite happily these are just teporary 'appartments'. I've been keeping a close eye on water quality and it's remained pretty stable so I think my little ram will be fine for the next few weeks with my bettas. Plus I change the water 25% twice a week to remove solid waste from that tank because my catfish are poop machines.
So sorry, I often neglect that they measurements used overseas are different from Aussie measurements. I'll have to keep that in mind.
Wish-ga, nice to see you. Sorry exams have been eating up all my time lately.

I think that dude might be right on this, but then again, the standard 10 gallon is also know as a 10 long. This seperates it from a ten hex or a ten high or something.

And on the BN, I though a combined 9" of poop machines would create alot of waste. Besides, if you did something with them, you could get more rams Algae isn't a problem as they make wafers for that, although I'm sure the real thing tastes much better.
But, to each their own.

I dunno, Tanker, she also refers to 10L... don't think there IS a ten long... She also refers to getting a bigger tank which would be 2'... a twenty long is 30". I'm thinking dude might be right on this.

Could we get clarification, fuzzy_dragonfly?

I have a BN in a 20 long... Why is that an issue, dj? Or is it just the combo of having two? I can't imagine having enough algae to feed BOTH of them when they're bigger.

Yeah, fuzzy, your gona have to clear that up a bit for us. If it is a 20 LONG (has the same surface area as a 29 gallon or even a 37 gallon!) then, you are not overstocked at all. THE BN will be a problem when they grow up, but we can find a solution to that in the meantime. But, if it is a 20 liter that you are talking about, all I can say is "woah!".

Welcome

20L means a 20 gallon long as opposed 20 20g which is a normal 20 or a 20h which is a 20 high.

Wow what a coincidence! next year I'll be able to teach part time in primary schools as I finish my last year of uni. Isn't middle school from year 5-8? I'm teaching a year 6 class at the moment.
I know exactly what you mean with all the fish tanks . My bedroom looks like a public aquarium .
I was going to hold off getting more fish anyway. Well at least until I get the 2' tank .
I'm addicted to poultry too which makes it worse .
My new Butterfly Ram has settled in remarkably well, I have never seen a gentler fish. It prefers to stay in the company of my CT female betta.
There's a good cichlid specialty shop nearby, they sell super rare cichlids and catfish. Awesome display tanks and they have cichlids up to 60cm -70cm, and you should see their 1m catfish, absolutely amaizing. Sometimes I go there just to admire the fish. Mind you the shop attendants always have to get out their crowbar to seperate me from the tanks , but I'm sure you can sympathize.

Nice to meet you Klara, as the name says over there I'm Heidi...I too have a great variety of fishies and tanks:%) I have a 125 (6ft), with hasbrosus, metaes (breeding), agazzis, arched, albino corries, clown loaches, bn, neon tetras, emperor tetras, 1 male guppy (don't ask), Harlequin Rasboras, and "Lucky the Betta" (noone could really say what he/she is...but it's beautiful, was a lucky find, and is quite peaceful). A 55 gallon (4ft) that had 18 Mbuna Cichlids, until the flipping seal broke]:|. A 29 gallon (3ft?) that has guppies, guppies, and ummm guppies in it I believeand some visiting clown loaches to clean up the snail problem. there is a 20 gallon reg. (2ft?) with guppies, guppies and guppies, along with metae fry/juvenile, hasbrosus, and soon the two visiting clown loaches. A 10 gallon with 2 male bettas with a divider in it. A 2.5 gallon tank with Endlers in it. And empty 20 long, 20 reg, 20 reg (I need to pick up from the previous owner on ebay with 3 gouramies in it), 10 gallon, 5 gallon, and a 10 gallon at school that I removed or tried to remove all the guppies from Friday...

I too am a teacher, have taught for 7 years now, 6 at the jr. high level, and 1 at intermediate (3rd grade). I have decided that I don't belong in the elementary scene, as I don't have the patience with them, but love the jr. high level, with their craziness :%)

As far as getting 1-2 more I'd wait since you don't want to overcrowd the tank. It will also give you a reason to get an even larger tank...

Well, I think I'll split, I'll be around for a bit longer Klara, it's only 9:45 pm, Sunday here, so school hasn't entered my mind too much yet hope the test went well, heidi

Yeah it's not the first time it's happened, just didn't expect a cichlid! I'm tempted to buy 2 more but I know that the tank isn't really big enough. At the moment I have 2 baby bristlenose, 4 female bettas and the cichlid in that tank, it's heavily planted. What do you think should I squeeze 1 or 2 more in? it doesn't appear overcrowded and the water quality is stable, but I'm hesitant 7 small fish is alot for 20L, maybe I'll wait.
Besides I'm getting an old 2' tank soon, second hand from dad's numerous failures at keeping goldfish. It has no light but that's OK bristle nose catfish are a bit sensitive to light anyway.
Talk about overcrowding, I was at the LFS today and a couple bought a tank probebly no bigger then 10L with 10 goldfish, to top it off they want to keep bubble eyed goldfish with commets . My first tank was 1 goldfish to 10L and even that's too small, imagine 10!
Ah yeah sorry, I didn't introduce myself, hi I'm Klara, I'm a regular contributer to australian betta forums, obviously my passion is bettas! I'm a proud owner of veil tails, crowntails, halfmoons, deltas and a plakat. I've had I sucessful spawn so far and about ten times that amount in unsucessful spawns . I also have pigeons, ducks, rabbits, chickens, a tiel, a budgie, cats and some mantis. I like drawing, and I'm undergoing training to become a primary school teacher. speaking of which, I have an exam tommorow and it's almost 1:00am , better be off to get some shut eye.
Cheers.
