very closely related to Herichthys cyanoguttatus, though H. carpintis stays somewhat smaller. I believe males grow to the 10" range but they might get slightly larger. I'd say absolute minimum tank size for a pair would be a 40 breeder, 40 long or 55 gallon tank. a 75 would be great for a pair though giving them plenty of room to move around and room for the female to get away if the male gets a bit aggressive during courting. The only fish I'd put with a pair is something incredibly fast. Texas cichlids can be quite aggressive, especially when breeding. I'd rank the Texas and carpintis in the same aggression class as green terrors and jack dempseys.

well you need to watch out for these texas. i have one and it is the most agressive fish i ever owned and i have had my share of agressive fishes he would pick on both my green terror and jack dempsey which are no longer with us . it picks on all the other fish hes pretty much a bully and he does not care about a bigger fish then him he picks on them all and makes sure he picks on the weak. the only ones who dare fight back are my oscar and pacu but the texas is just to territorial. watch out for what kind of fishes you decide to have in with him.
