This always seems to be the downfall of me - I want to feed them as much as they want. Now that I've decided to be somewhat devoted to fishkeeping I decided to get a Jack Dempsey who'll be my friend for years. He's actually about three inches long. I have Hikari Cichlid staple mini pellets. About how many pellets should I feed him per day?

Feed him whatever he can eat in 2 minutes or so, twice a day. Dont forget water changes though. Also what size do you have him in?

He doesn't eat any amount in two minutes. I put about two or three pellets in there and he eats them maybe within ten minutes. If I only gave him what he ate in two minutes, he'd always go without any food. It's like he's waiting for something good and then gives up when he realizes that's all he's getting...

Try some flakes, and put them in the filter stream thats how i feed my cichlids. Cichlids aren't big fans of coming to the surface for food. Also feed him some fozen foods.
