honestly it is very hard.. there are many ways ppl say u can see the gender by a bump on the males head... etc..
The only real way imo you can tell what is what is when they spawn.. other then that you can just guess..
the one laying the eggs is female!
the male has a longer spawning tube and the femals is smaller and rounder..

Shine a flashlight from behind the fish in question. If there is a pear shaped organ near the anal region, it is a female. If not, it's a male.

It's very difficult to sex Angels. To be 100% sure, you must see them spawning.

Not trying to hijack this thread but it is along the same line... I have 2 "pairs" of angels in my 6ft tank and 1 definite girl keeps putting eggs over pipes and anything she can find and the other acts as if it's fertilising (never see eggs coming out of that one) and they both guard the eggs but they never seem to be fertilised and I see them eating the eggs themselves eventually. Will another female act as if she's fertilising? or even add to the eggs herself? because I see it's vent down while it's doing it
Last time this happened the female looked like she was getting angry at it's mate when it was doing this.

you might be dealing with a young pair. it normally takes 2 to 3 times before the male figure out what to do. actually mine just spawned today.

Yes, the first few times might go wrong & the male or the female can eat the eggs. There also might be some fighting between the 2, but they'll spawn again in 2 weeks time.

And there are some pairs that never shape up their parenting capabilites. Out of my seven pairs, past and present, only two raised the fry to the full extent of their development into free swimmers.

most breeders will just get a group of let say 6 and let them pair off. my wholesaler told me that a way that isn't always right, is look at the bottom fin, if it goes straight down, then female , and if it is curved it is a male. or vise versa, (can't remeber) but this isn't alway the good way of sexing, so ur best off getting a couple of young guys and grow 'em.

Thanks for those answers

The two angels I'm talking about are about a year old, the other two are about 8 months and what I think is the female of the other group often fights with the female of the first pair.
It's not that I'm trying to breed them because if they ever did get to breed successsfully the poor little guys would never survive in there anyway

when they are breeding the female has a small tube under her that she lays the eggs with..... males have a pointed tube....
