Hey folks,

I was wondering how often do electric yellows breed? I had 3 small ones in a 29 gallon and just over 2 months ago I was surprised to to see 2 fry. The 2 are doing great, a little over an inch now and starting to color up. Unfortuntely one of the grown females died. Yesterday I was startled to see another very small fry. There maybe more.

I would say fairly often, my yellow lab female was holding about a month or more ago and ended up with just one fry who is thriving but it sure does look like she is holding again already.

Gibson SG you know you want one!!

It depends on how much fry the mother has, because if she only has a few, she wont spend as much time caring for them and will come back in to breeding condition sooner, but if she has a fair amount she should will take longer. She holds the eggs for up to 3 weeks, and will take care of them for around 1 week, and then she will start breeding a coulpe of weeks after that once she gets her strength. So 3 to 4 weeks usually.

In all my experience with malawi mbuna, once you have an established breeding colony (1m, 2-3f) up and breeding you can expect broods every mth and a half or so.
You really have to keep the females in top shape if you want them to continue...
though the more females the more often you get fry....
