first and foremost, let's address compatibility.

putting Angelfish with convicts would not be a good idea. Convicts get way too aggressive for the slow swimming angelfish. Both fish would need a lot more room than just a 25 gallon, but if you MUST get one or the other, you can get away with TWO convicts and NOTHING else...and that's if you keep up with regular water changes.

I personally would reccommend getting something else...something less agressive and something that doesn't get too big. maybe some rams and a couple schools of tetras?

If your wanting to have cichlids in your 25 gallon rams, dwarfs, or shellies are probably going to be about your only choice for a tank that size.Anything else just gets to big. Are possibly consider going with something else.

could i have a kissing gourami & 4 yoyo loaches

i know that the kissing gourami grows 30 cm but at one of my LFS they said 50 litres and mine is 25 gallons .

also the book i have says that a tank of 60cm ( long ) is the minimum .

I believe with the kissing gourami you are pushing the bare minium size tank it would need. As far as something that acts like a cichlid, If it looks like a cichlid and acts like a cichlid then its probably a cichlid. Have you considered maybe something semi aggressive along the lines of maybe tiger barbs.

You probably could but lets be honest you don't want to have a 25 gallon tank with only 1 kissing gouami in it. If your sisters got tiger barbs maybe you could go with a shoal of albino and green tiger barbs or maybe even go with a shoal of some type tetra.

I like the idea of adding some Blue/or Bolivian Rams.

Also some Gold Barbs would be a nice choice.

the answer is simple...get a bigger tank...or get a brichardii aka fairy cichlid they stay small and are one of the meanest small fish out there.

brichardii

get a male and female so they pair up wohoo. these pretty little princess' would rip tiger barbs to shreds in seconds especielly if protecting babies.

ok honestly i think these guys are a bad idea. they require a bit of fish know how and im assumeing you are of the younger sort. so ill suggest Bolivian rams, these guys are pretty, small , and will pair up for ya. they swim side by side as a couple if you get them to pair. they arnt insanely agressive. they would leave you plenty of room in the tank for a school of harlies and maybe a trio of yoyos or cories.

anyway they will leave you with alot of options and they ARE cichlids. they wont destroy a tank of fish with agression but they are still cichlids.

How about a pair of kribs? They're smallish and can take care of themselves.

true brichardii do need quite good water quality and things can get a bit messy when they start stressing things to death because of constant harassment... i think rams are your go.

I think rams can live nicely with angelfish, I'm not sure though. some tetras would go nicely with them all.

I agree with Doctor J. Kribs will go well in a 25, can have a biggish cichlid attitude(at times), and are quite pretty. Also they are fun to breed too.
