I went to the aquatic market here in Jakarta, wanted to pick up some new plants. This is a huge place where breeders and gardeners come to sell anything for marine or freshwater set ups you can think of.

Anyway, as usual after I got my plants I went for a wander to have a look at the fish stock (there's always a rare unidentifiable monster to be found). There's always a few guys selling discus and I always pop in as they are such glorious fish.

So I go to a guy who a huge selection, from juvies up to adults, and then I saw it, the most beautiful fish I have ever seen in my life (and I include saltwater in that) .
It was a magnificent discus, about half way to adulthood, but it was the coloring and marking that got me. It had a cream/beige colored body with some reddish vertical stripes in the middle of it's body and then a few horizontal rows of red dots running the lenght of it's body. Also it was an incredibly healthy looking fish. It didn't have the bright vibrant colors of other discus but I just thought the stunning simple beauty of the fish and it's marking took my breath away. Any idea what kind of discus this is ?

I've never kept Discus and always imagined they were quite shy and timid, but this one came straight to the front of the tank even though I had my face pressed to the glass, made me love it even more. Oh the guy had 3 0r 4 of this type of Discus.I was all set to run around the market buying everything I needed to set up a Discus tank when the wife hit me over the head with her handbag and that ended that (for now)

Never considered Discus before but it's now definately something I want to aim for the future.

BTW, the price for this beauty (and every other Discus for sale here) 100,000 Indonesian Rupiah - let me convert that for you , 9400 rp to a US$ that would be $10.63 , ten dollars and sixty three cents My wife was complaining to the guy that he was too expensive , everbody else was selling their tetras for 25 cents !! I just smiled and left her to it (my head still hurt from the handbag bashing)

My tank is almost 70gals, (I round it down to 65 because of substrate and wood etc). Living in the tropics I don't use a heater but my water is constantly 28-30oC year round. So all in all probably a perfect set up for Discus. But, unfortunately I'm fully stocked, no more room at the. inn. It's a community, no aggressive fish, mainly rainbows and tetras but maybe a bit "busy" for Discus.

Would one Discus on it's own do ok ?

Discus "snobs" always want a name! If you like them then go ahead. It seems to me there cheep (very) What you really want to know as you have already sussed is they are addictive.

There's nothing in the 65g that I'm willing to give up, so no room in that tank. But I also saw a beuatiful selection of rainbows at the market so what I'd like to do is set up another all rainbow planted tank. Then I can move the current stock of rainbows into that and I would have room in the 65 for at least 2 discus.

Hmmmm.....there's an empty space in the living room that needs filling. Uhhhhhh......there's a wife who needs convincing:88)
