I went to a LFS I normally don't go to. They had some shell dwellers there to my surprise. They claimed the kind they had was Neolamprologus multifasciatus. However the color of their bodies were brown instead of white, and the color of the fins were yellow. So was the LFS wrong about the kind of fish they were, or is it possible this batch of fish they have are indeed multifasciatus but with different colors?

My multis have yellow fins.

And the stripes when fadey look grey. When they colour up (adult males/defending territory) the stipes can be brown in colour.

They are a GREAT fish. Hope you love your tank as much as I love mine.

Well I got some multies already. I've seen the dark stripes before on them, and now that I think about it, the multies fins are kind of yellow, it just doesn't stand out as much against the white of the fiji pink sand. Just what I was saying before was the whole body of the fish, not the stripes were brownish in color, perhaps it could been due to the dark substrate at the LFS. I think I might just go ahead and buy them. I haven't been able to find multies since March. So currently I only have 3, when I'd much rather have more, 6 at least.

Only three??? lol. I started with 4, and now have a couple hundred. I use them to pay for all my equiptment. The multis and the gold occilatus are my best sellers, and are always in demand at the LFS. I have not bought a filter, or much else for my fish room, in many years. For trading/selling these guys to the LFS.

You must have 3 males or 3 females.

Yeah, mine have not been breeding. When I bought them, that was that they had at the LFS. So today I'll go and buy some of these.

Alright so I bought one today. I introduced him (or her) to the tank. However when the other multies took notice of him, they puffed up their cheeks and they swam in front of him, so that their tail fin would be in front of his face. So I went and rearranged stuff in the tank. They have stopped bugging him. Then later on I went to the LFS where I got my first multies and to my great surprise they had three. They told me these were from a different batch of the ones I bought. So I introduced those guys, there was no harassment at all. These ones I bought though are really tiny. They instead of hanging around the shells are spending more time by the Texas Holey rock, perhaps due to there was no shells at the tank. It's been 10+ hours, and finally the one I bought today which I wasn't sure if it was a multi or not changed colors. So instead of being a really dark brown, it is the white color. Perhaps due to the substrate being white (fiji pink sand), white Texas holey rocks. Also at the LFS, the substrate was a dark brown gravel and regular freshwater. In my water I put Kent Cichlid: cichlid chemistry and cichlid buffer. Now they still have more multies from where I bought this guy at. Do any of you think it would be alright if I bought more? They are in a 20 gallong Long tank

So, what is your total in the tank?

A bigger footprint is good. So the 20 ft long stands you in good stead. But I don't want to answer until I know how many you are at so far.

btw I try not to add any fish as a solo intruder. New fish on the block can get ugly. You are on the money with rearranging the decor. Newbies more than one at a time gives everyone "checking each other out" time.
