Yes and no if the other fish/s is just as aggressive the two could gang up on him but if they are all around the same when one is being chased the other has time to get away, regroup and so on.

hey bjhecker

it sounds like your going through the same exact behavior i went through. instead of my male jack getting sick i bought him thinking he was a texas cichlid. so when ever they started the chasing it soon turned into mating then i had 400 hatchlings within a months time.

when i introduced them at the start they were both 2 inches, in a 30usg. but the female stop growing because she was having fry so i separated them do to the lack of space for the fry

so i would tell you to play it by hear so hopfully it will result in some fry!

you need more fish one on one is hardly fare add some more fish so the dominant one is busey chasing the new fish the other will get a break add more fish to reduce the aggression that any one fish is dealt. some goog fish to add would be salvini, convicts, blue acara other medium sized americans.

So I put the two together about 5 days ago and I'm not sure if they'll be able to get along. The smaller got beat pretty bad so I took it out. Nothing to terrible it just seemed so constant and it lost a decent portion of almost every fin. I'm pretty sure its the female (smaller stubby fins and less blue in the gills) So right now the male is enjoying a spatious 75 gallon with two small plec's. I'm open for suggestions.

I also have two males in a 75g and i hardly ever see them fight the less dominant knows his place and if he flares his gills or anything are the more dominant one he gets a bite for his trouble. So i hope your like me and get little to no aggression.

So I went ahead and baught myself a 75g tank. I'm about to set it up to run for a week or two to get the water stable and I was just wondering if anyone had any more suggestions on what to do with these battling fish. I've done a bit of research and it is possibile that both are males. I'm not possitive yet but I should have pictures early next week. If its something we need to think about. If anyone can be of any help on ideas or maybe guidance I would greatly appretiate it.

So basically we are all in cohoots about the idea of a bigger tank. Other fish could be an option but we should worry about the two getting along first off and maybe astabolish a base from there?

I currently have two dempsey's, one male and the other female, both about 3-4 inches. They lived together for about a month and then the male got sick. So I removed him and he is very healthy but still a little smaller than she is. I tried to re-introduce him back into the tank and they faught for some time and then she just ended up over powering him and chasing him all over the tank. My question is if its normal and they will eventually find their territories and leave eachother alone or if I have two fish that need to be seperated for life. Currently they are in a 10 and 30 gallon tank. I am also in the market for a larger tank hopefully being set up within two months. If you can help I would appretiate some advice. thanks

Just sort of another question on the same topic. Say I went to a 95 gal. Could another fish or fish's help out the situation?

Well the way it sounds I am just going to have to throw them in a bigger tank together, which was the plan to start with. Thanks for any help you gave and hopefully after I get a new tank they can coexist.

Well, if you are looking to house them permenantly, a 55G is the best choice. A 30G might not have adequate footspace to allow the two to coexist peacefully, as the loser will be unable to flee from the winner. As the fish will ultimately need a 55G as they mature, it might be best to start them out there and see if they can't coexist. If they can't, try a divider and see if you can get the female to show some breeding interest over time. As shes the aggressor, her willingness might bring an end to the aggressiveness in the tank.

Sounds to me like you have two males. in the wild they are solitary and they lock jaws to show dominance. Females and males dont usualy jaw lock.

He got his fair share of shots in at the start but eventually she won and was chasing him all over the tank. How long do you think I should let them go at it?

Let them them go at it. You never know they may breed. Are you sure its the female doing the kicking?

I did that before I put them in. I kept the same things in the tank I just re-aranged the tank set up. still didn't work. They faught for a good hour to an hour and a half. There wasn't any damage done they just locked at the mouth for a long time. Thanks for the reply though. If you have any more suggestions keep firing them at me I need all the help I can get right now.
