New to the site, not new to tanks. I'll probably be flamed for the things in my tank.

55g
Jack Dempsey
Black Convict
Red Devil
Red Terror?

They actually get along really well. My question is this. I bought this fish from a friend and from what I've been told it's a Red Terror. Tell me what you think.

I'm assuming all the fish are young, otherwise you would have about 1 fish in your tank right now. I can't get the pic to load but seriously think about getting a larger tank because as those fish grow they are going to get down right nasty towards each other. To keep those fish at a full grown size you will need a tank of 175+ gallons.

Jack Dempsey is like 2.5 inches
Red Terror is 2.5 inches
Black Convict 2 inches
Red Devil is less than 2 inches

I made sure the Red Devil was the smallest. He is NOT the toughest in the tank. I learned from my last tank. I bought them all at once so they a familiar with each other. Honestly they get along great.

Click on the link in my first post. I changed them to url's.

Yep, that is a Red Terror, AKA Festae. Plan on him getting about 14-16 inches long and becomming a complete bull.

Awesome, I love that fish. He's the only one that won't eat feeders out of the group. He will only eat Chic flakes, not mini pellets, nothing.

don't be too sure about that...looks more like a Uropthalmus to me from those pics. it's really hard to tell though. here's the way to tell for sure...look at the first vertical bar just behind the gills. does this form a Y or is it straight up and down? if it forms a Y it's a festae but if it's a straight vertical line just like the rest of them then it's a uro.

also, these fish only get along because they have yet to mature. at around 6" the red devil will start killing off tankmates until most likely it's the only fish left. if that's a true festae it would do the same but it won't reach maturity as quickly as the devil so I predict eventually you'll be left with just the red devil.

It doesn't look y shaped. It's not the straightest line on him though. I'll try to post up a better pic when he shows his bars. He wasn't happy with me snapping pics.

I had a Red Devil the last time and even when big he didn't kill off anyone. He's the smallest and whimpiest one out of the 4 right now. Hopefully this one won't get nuts. His color really makes the tank.

Ok I see what your saying. The bottom of the very first bar meets with the bottom second bar. So it is Y shaped.

[link=look here]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/profiles/redterror.xml" style="COLOR: #FF8080[/link] to see what I mean by Y shaped. the fish in the picture is (my) female festae. you can clearly see the Y shaped bars just behind her gills.

no matter what the temperament of the devil and wether the "red terror" is festae or uro, these fish will not get along permanently in a 55 gallon. you'll eventually need multiple larger tanks to keep them all.

On that pic you showed the first bar meets the second bar in the middle. On mine it meets the second bar a bit lower. It is Y shaped though. It says in the link that the Red Terror is in the top 5 of aggressive fish. Mine isn't that aggressive at all.

what you have to understand is your red terror at 2.5" is only a baby. it's not going to be aggressive for a while. once it reaches about 6" then look out cause it will reach maturity and it's true personality will come out. at that point if it's a male you'll need a 6' tank for just the red terror or the terror and a mate but keep a divider handy. if it turns out to be female then a 75 gallon will do.

Thanks Jason! I'm stoked it's a Red Terror. I hope he gets meaner. He and the Red Devil are best friends. Each fish has their own home but the Terror and Devil choose to be roomates. They swim together, they stick together constantly.

maybe it's a case of "keep your friends close, and your enemies closer"

seriously though, they're just babies. give em 4-6 months and they'll be trying to kill each other...literally.
