What is the minimum tank size for keeping either a JD or and Oscar? If just one of these fish, can anything else be kept in the tank like some sort of bottom feeder?

There is water at the bottom of the ocean

ok, I'm not going to give the min. tank size in gallonage...instead I'm going to give you what I'd consider the minimum length x width of the tank. the minimum height should be 16-18".

for a JD, I'd say the minimum should be either a 36" x 18" or 48" x 12" tank. IMO, a 36" x 12" is just cutting too much into the swimming space of a JD and would make it feel more cramped and would therefore make it more aggressive.

For an oscar, IMO the bare minimum should be 48" x 18". Many say a 55 is fine, which has a 48" x 13" but oscars can grow easily to 14" and larger. A 48" x 18" tank would give the oscar much more swimming and turning room as it reaches full size. A 48" x 24" tank would be wonderful for an oscar, but that's going to run quite a bit more $$$.

as for tankmates, either the JD or oscar should be ok with most non-cichlid tankmates provided they are not small enough to be eaten. Most Synodontus, pictus or raphael cats should be fine with either. also, if you're buying these cichlids at a very small size a larger bristlenose (3"+) should be ok and would be great for algae.
