I currently have 2 J. regani 'Kipili' by themselves in a 29g; both are ~2" long and quite shy. I'm placing an order for more, will this lessen the shyness?

At what size can they be sexed, and how? At what size can they start breeding?

Their profile states they are middle-bottom dwelling. Below is a picture of how the tank is currently set up. The 3 'rocks' circled are artifical with 2 openings. Will these work for spawning? If so, are they ok where they are located or should I move them to the bottom?

And finally, is a sand substrate an absolute necessity?

Thanks

the rock pile looks good. the fake rocks wont matter one way or another. they might use them might not. they are just as likely to spawn in a natural cave made by the rocks. i wouldnt remove them they look good

as far as more helpign with shyness...no prolly not but more will improve your chances of a male/female pair forming. i think 6 total will give you over a 95% chance of both sexs.

once they get comfortable with the tank they should be out in the open alot but for a couple weeks they will prolly dart around in the rocks and hide. best thing to do to cure shyness is to feed 3-5 small meals a day. this will speed up connecting you with food which makes you good to see heheh. typical cichlid psychotheropy lol food.
