I am very interested in getting a pair of Jack Dempsey from a small size and growing them up and breeding them in a tank (by themselves) but I really want to no what the smallest possible breeding tank I could get for this pair (btw I will have a hospital tank for them) because I have seen pairs at my lfs in like 3 foot tanks is that ok??? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated

40gallons are much better than 30. I would say 40 minimum. Breeding JAck Dempseys is very rewarding. I raised my pair from 1 inchers. The female is now 7 inches and the male is 5.5. They are great cichlids.

what are the dimensions of a 33 gallon? without knowing those, I'd recommend either a 40 long (48" x 13" x 16" I think) or a 40 breeder (36" x 18" x 18". I could be wrong about the heights of those tanks, but I think either would make a great breeding tank for Jacks. I wouldn't go much less than those though.

sounds okay to me. You will want slate, and very fine gravel, if not sand. My jacks "burrow" in the gravel when its spawning time. I even made a little "base" with rocks in a corner and they have always laid their eggs within that base. Now, even when they aren't spawning, they still will kill anything that comes near it. The 55 gallon would benefit them greatly in the future.

It could get interesting with them defending the fry from oscars, but I have never tried it. Jack Dempseys are incredibly aggressive when it is spawning time, and those oscars might see a snack.

Is it easy to sex JD's and if so how do you do it. I would love to buy a make and female but I've never seen pairs sold as juveniles.

JD's are much easier to sex when they get a bit larger...in the 4-5" range. As juveniles it can be very difficult. It's best to buy 6-8 juveniles and let pairs form naturally. Even if you were to buy a single male and female there is no guaruntee they would form a pair.
