I was wondering approximately what size JD's form pairs. I have two in my 250 gallon and I think they may be a pair but they are still small. One is about 3.5 inch and the other about 2.75 inches. Do they form this small?

Some of the things they are doing is hanging out together, digging holes together and making caves. I've even seen the larger one bring food down to the smaller one and working together to defend against others in the tank.

What should I look for to see if they're a pair?
And if they are a pair:
What size do they breed at?

Thanks for your help.

Surely there's more people out there that breed JD's that can answer my questions.

If i was to setup a breeding tank for them, would it need gravel??

i would do gravel and some driftwood for laying eggs.

when ever my jd fry were hatched they always hung out aroung the gravel or one corner of the aquarium.

but when ever the fry get stripes your going to need to seperate them from the parents.

I know this will probably sound silly but can the tank be bare bottomed or must it have gravel?

It is going to be used as a breeding tank and hence it would be easier to keep clean. Also I don't have any and it would be great if I didn't have to buy any.
