i have a 75 gallon. some people say that the jaguars or (managuese) get to be 18 inches some say like 14. would a pair work in 75 gallon. or at least 1 work? if not a like green terrors, salvinis, texans. whats a good combo? also i would like info on pikes, gars and barracudas that i see at the fish stores. how big, mean, aggressive, compatability, ect. also are there any fish that look like an arrowana but dont get as big? thanx

I have salvinis, convicts and jewels in my cichlid tank. I think you can try this combination in your 75. I prefer to keep more fish than just one large cichlid, tats why I chose medium sized cichlids for my tank.

I have 2 of each, and 2 striped raphael catfish.

thanx for the reply. any one else know anything about gars or the fresh water barracudas? is there any kind that can fit in a 75 comfortably, and whether they are overly aggressive witht he fish in the tank or just when eating?

No, a gar would not fit in that tank. They need a huge tank. Also, gars are not aggressive, they only eat what fits in their mouths. Many times the gars will get harassed by other fish so you have to watch what you put them in. The only fish similar to a gar that you could keep in a 75 or even a 55 would be a grass pickeral. They are a bit harder to find though. Remember you can't put gar with other aggressive fish.

if you like jags but want something suitable for a 75, then you should check out either the salvini or one of the jag's smaller cousins P. loisellei or P. friedrichsthalli.

yes you can provided you have adequate filtration. I've done this before on a couple of tanks. I switched out the gravel in my 150 once for brand new gravel but I had 3 Aquaclear 500's on it. I also changed the gravel to sand on a 29 gallon and the filtration on that tank was 1 Aquaclear 300. So long as you have good filtration you should be ok and not have to worry about a mini cycle.

Just be sure to do a very thorough gravel vac before you remove the old gravel so it doesn't kick up a bunch of gunk into the water.

that should be plenty of filtration to handle the substrate switch imo. Just change the gravel out during a normal water change...that's what I did.
