I am busily planning my 46 gal tank (See other posts) I want community tank. I am adding the following tenetivly:

1x Angelfish (Preferably a dime or quartersized calico)
1x African Butterfly Fish
3x small clown loaches

I am considering a schools of tetras or barbs to go with it, but I recently saw some JB Parrots (Dime-sized) at WalMart. Are they compatable? Would I need more then one? I know they get to be 8" or bigger and I think that they would add alot of color to my tank. What do you think?

I would say no, especially if they are jellybean parrots and not blood parrots. jellybeans are blood parrots that have been crossed with pink convicts, and they often bear the same temperament as a convict. put that temperament on a decent sized fish and that will spell a lot of trouble for your angel. the best thing you could hope for is that the jellybean would not see the angel as a threat and would therefore leave it alone, but there's no guaruntee that would happen. if you want to be safe then I would leave out the jellybean.

also, you said a jellybean would add a lot of color...what color were the ones you saw? if they were anything other than a pinkish color (similar to a pink con) then they've been artificially dyed. if that is the case then the color will fade, and the lifespan of the fish will most likely be greatly shortened. most dyed fish don't live past 6 months but there are the occasional exceptions.

jsut a side note, u know that clowns will need to be moved, but to get back to the question.

if u are thinking about reg parrots, than without the tank size factor, they can be mixed. i did have 10 inch parrots with some small angels with no problems. no sure about jellybean parrots but jason is probably right,

(not for u, but in general)with the dye factor ..... anyway really the color only last a few months so if u buy for the color factor, they will turn back to red/yellow/orange in a few months.

I plan on updating within two years or a little after I graduate from collage, basically it depends on my finances and if I am moving back to my hometown or not. If they get too big and I cant provide space for them, I will give them away or sell them.

I think I am going to omit the butterfly from my stock list and just go with tetras or rams + angels.

PS I DO NOT BUY ANY INJECTED FISH!!! So I guess I will omit the JB. I liked it because of the color and because the get a little smaller then the blood parrots. ^_^

Thanks for the info

Congrats on stocking a new tank...all those choices! From what i can see, you will be having an angel and a butterfly fish. Both beautiful fish. I don't think you would need anything else for a centerpiece. You never know the temperment of the angels. Perhaps you can get some cory cats? I've seen some very colorful species out there!

I've got a fever... and the only prescription... is more cowbell!

i would do without the clown loaches if i had to make the choice. They get rather large. Consider maybe a smaller loach or botia. I am not familiar with the temperment of the butterfly fish, so if it is aggressive, do without it and get some tetras (no neons with the angel though). Lemon Tetras have a neat yellow color and there are numerous others to choose from, and most are nice community fish. Experiment with combinations with fish tank levels...corys for the bottom, maybe a gourami for the top level, and schooling for the middle. That will make the most out of your tank and keep it less "congested" in certain areas!

Although I am keen on the butterfly, I may have to do without one I don't want to overstock my tank....

1x Butterfly
3x Veil Angelfish
4x Rams
3x Clown Loaches

That may be over doing it
